What’s on my mind in this new year is continuing our trajectory toward increased professionalism.
Winter always begins with great festivity – a surge of inspiration and joy that we hope will continue through the long, cold months of the season. After all the celebrations, we return to campus with a quieter tone of winter on this side of the calendar year, which gives us a fresh opportunity to listen and perhaps hear something new. The first few months of 2019 offer us the power and potential of a different perspective. As the School of Medicine continues the trajectory of transforming our culture and sustaining a highly professional environment this year, I wish to cultivate an atmosphere of respect which plays a significant role in our vision. Human rights activist and author, Bryant McGill, once said that “one of the most sincere forms of respect is actually listening to what another has to say.” I couldn’t agree more, which is why I so fervently prioritized creating platforms last year in which we could truly listen carefully to each other.
In late November and December, I held more than 15 Town Hall listening meetings with various groups of faculty, staff, and students. The main purpose of these meetings included encouraging and supporting each other during this culture transformation time and just listening. Both our listening tour and the strategic plans we had begun executing in early 2018 demonstrated a course of necessary actions that we took immediately, the first of which I described in last month’s message. Since then, the commitment and dedication to our new Culture Transformation Initiative (CTI) have both encouraged and impressed me. My goals for this new metric-based effort extend beyond that of our immediate academic community — to reconstruct the UMSOM culture into a national model for a respectful, inclusive, and professional work environment.

As we move into 2019 and further toward all the goals we established both personally and professionally, individually and collectively, I know I can expect to celebrate even more achievements together this year than last year. New Faculty
Sarah McAvoy, MD, joined the Department of Radiation Oncology as an Assistant Professor in November 2018. She is based at the Tate Cancer Center at the Baltimore Washington Medical Center, with additional time at the University of Maryland Medical Center and the Maryland Proton Treatment Center. She received her medical degree from the University of Minnesota and completed an internship at Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis, Minn. She then completed a radiation oncology residency at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, Houston, Tex. She came to Maryland from Mercy Medical Center, Des Moines, Iowa.

Carissa Baker-Smith, MD, MPH, MS, FAAP, FAHA, Assistant Professor, Department of Pediatrics, has been selected as the Vice Chair of the American Heart Association Cardiovascular Disease of the Young (CVDY), and Atherosclerosis, Hypertension and Obesity in the Young (AHOY) subcommittee.
Rebecca Carter, MD, Assistant Professor, Department of Pediatrics, has been competitively selected as a member of the Educational Scholars Program through the Academic Pediatric Association. This esteemed program targets faculty in academic pediatrics to build their skills in educational scholarship. Erin Giudice, MD, Assistant Professor, Department of Pediatrics and Maureen Black, PhD, the John A. Scholl, MD and Mary Louise Scholl, MD Professor in Pediatrics, will serve as mentors for Dr. Carter during this three-year program.
Natalie Davis, MD, MMSc, Assistant Professor; Suma Hoffman, MD, Assistant Professor; and Colleen Hughes Driscoll, MD, Assistant Professor; all from the Department of Pediatrics, were inducted as members of the Society for Pediatric Research. The mission of the Society for Pediatric Research is to create a network of multi-disciplinary researchers to improve child health. The Society provides programming for research meetings, career opportunities, and advocacy on the medical systems issues that affect members’ ability to do research.
Shannan Dixon, MS, CGC, Assistant Professor, Department of Pediatrics, was elected to serve as the Vice President of the Association of Genetic Counseling Program Directors. Her term will begin January 2019 and end December 2020.
Brian Mathur, PhD, Assistant Professor, Department of Pharmacology, was accepted as Associate Member of the American College of Neuropsychopharmacology (ACNP).
Community Outreach
On September 16, students and faculty from the DPT Program in the Department of Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Science participated in balance screenings at the Baltimore County Department of Aging, 12th Annual Get Ready! Get Set! Get Fit! 5k Run/Walk and 1 mile Walk. Faculty participants included Linda Horn, PT, DScPT, MHS, GCS, NCS, Assistant Professor, and Rachel Skolky, PT, DPT, GCS, Instructor.
In addition, on September 19, several of the second year DPT students, volunteered at the Amputee Walking School cohosted by Dankmeyer, Inc. and the University of Maryland Rehabilitation and Orthopaedic Institute. On September 29, members of the Department of Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Science’s DPT Class of 2019 and Class of 2020 participated in the 16th Annual CommUnity Fest Health Fair held at Lexington Market in Baltimore City. Blood pressure and posture screens were provided to 21 participants. Students from the Class of 2019 included: Lizzy Daniel, Matt Delapaz, Becky Gellar, Ali Forejt, and Alex Lee. Students from the Class of 2020 included: Erin Border, Anthony Garber, Angela Fernandez, Parth Naik, and Maricella William. The DPT students were mentored by Vincent Conroy, PT, DScPT, Assistant Professor.

Faculty from the Division of Translational Radiation Sciences (DTRS) in the Department of Radiation Oncology hosted visiting colleagues from the Taipei Medical University Hospital and Cancer Center, and the Taipei Veterans General Hospital in Taiwan, November 18–20, 2018. Zeljko Vujaskovic, MD, PhD, Professor, and Isabel Jackson, PhD, Associate Professor, led the nine visiting scientists and physicians in discussions about the clinical and translation research programs in radiation sciences at Maryland. The group toured the DTRS labs as well as the Maryland Proton Treatment Center, with a special focus on the new clinical hyperthermia program.
Gadi Alon, PT, PhD, Associate Professor Emeritus, Department of Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Science, attended the 22nd Annual Conference of the International Functional Electrical Stimulation Society (IFESS), August 28–31, 2018, where he presented a workshop titled, “FES in Pediatrics.”
Nariman Balenga, PhD, Assistant Professor, Department of Surgery, was invited to give a talk at the ninth Adhesion GPCR Workshop in Portland, Oreg. His presentation was titled, “Signaling and Trafficking of GPR64/ADGRG2 are Regulated by Its N-Terminal Fragment and Tethered Peptide.”
James Borrelli, PhD, Postdoctoral Fellow, Department of Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Science, presented a poster titled, “Pertubation-Evoked Lateral Steps in Older Adults: Why Take Two Steps When One Will Do?” at the American Society of Biomechanics (ASB) Conference in Rochester, Minn., August 8–12, 2018. Mary Rodgers, PT, PhD, FAPTA, FASB, FISB, Professor Emeritus, also from the Department of Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Science, and an ASB Fellow, was a Women in Science session chair, and co-authored the poster: “Mechanical Demand Imposed on the Shoulder During Propulsion in the Community” at the conference.
Peter Bowman, PT, DPT, FAAOMPT, Assistant Professor, and Alisa Pravdo, PT, DPT, FAAOMPT, Assistant Professor, both from the Department of Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Science, were co-authors on a poster presentation titled, “A Multimodal Treatment Approach Applying Manual Therapy and Strengthening Following Cerebrovascular Accident: A Case Report” at the American Academy of Orthopaedic Manual Physical Therapists Annual Conference, which was held in Reno, Nev., November 7–11, 2018.
Vincent Conroy, PT, DScPT, Assistant Professor, Department of Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Science, presented a talk on November 7, 2018, to Sinai Hospital’s PM&R residents titled, “Anatomical Review of the Lower Extremity: Clinical Implications?” The event was coordinated by Sinai PM&R Chief Resident, Dr. Paige Harrison.
Roy Film, PT, DPT, OCS, FAAOMPT, Assistant Professor, Department of Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Science, was an invited speaker and content expert at the second annual National Opioid Crisis Community Summit at the Aberdeen Proving Ground in Maryland on December 11, 2018. He presented a short talk titled, “Nonpharmacological Pain Management: Transforming Care to Combat the Opioid Crisis” and led a workshop to find actionable solutions to the opioid crisis on the local, state, and national levels. In attendance at the Summit were US Surgeon General Jerome Adams, Lt. Gov. Boyd Rutherford, and a group of over 300 health care professionals, policymakers, military leaders, state politicians, and community leaders.
Robert Gallo, MD, the Homer & Martha Gudelsky Distinguished Professor in Medicine, Co-Founder and Director, Institute of Human Virology, presented the keynote lecture on January 28, 2019, titled “HIV/AIDS: Lessons from the Past; Prospects for the Future,” at the Feodor Lynen Lecture and receive the Feodor Lynen Medal during the Miami Winter Symposium 2019 Evolving Concepts in HIV and Emerging Viral Infections hosted by the University of Miami. The prestigious lecture has been given by 28 then or future Nobel Laureates.
The Department of Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Science was well represented at the 2018 Annual Conference of the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) of DC and Maryland, held on November 3, 2018. Linda Horn, PT, DScPT, MHS, GCS, NCS, Assistant Professor, presented “Balance Interventions for Older Adults.” Victoria Marchese, PT, PhD, Associate Professor, presented a poster titled, “Exploring Lower Extremity Force Modulation While Jumping with Childhood Leukemia Cancer Survivors.” Sandra McCombe Waller, PT, PhD, MS, NCS, Associate Professor, a co-author on a poster presentation, was awarded 1st Place for, “Sequencing Bilateral Proximal and Unilateral Task Oriented Arm Training Improved Arm and Hand Function in Patients with Moderate Severity Chronic Hemiparesis.”
Isabel Jackson, PhD, Associate Professor, Department of Radiation Oncology, was an invited speaker at the Nuclear Security Summit at Georgetown 2018, held at the Georgetown Medical School in Washington, D.C. on December 11, 2018. Dr. Jackson presented “Neurocognitive Effects of Radiation Exposure Amongst First Responders and Long-Term Survivors in a Radiological or Nuclear Disaster.”
Brian Johnson, OTR/L, Occupational Therapist, Graduate Research Assistant, Department of Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Science, attended The American Society of Neurorehabilitation Annual Meeting in San Diego, Calif., October 31–November 2, 2018, where he presented a poster titled, “Acoustic Stimulation During a Daytime Nap to Enhance Sensorimotor Skill Performance in Older Adults with and without a History of Stroke.” Kelly Westlake, PhD, MSC, PT, Assistant Professor, also from the Department of Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Science, was a co-author.
Pranshu Mohindra, MD, MBBS, Assistant Professor, Department of Radiation Oncology, was a speaker at the Particle Therapy Co-Operative Group North America Seminar Series on Advanced Clinical Particle Therapy on November 30 and December 1, 2018 at the Winship Cancer Institute at Emory University, Atlanta, Ga. His presentation focused on “Mediastinal Lymphoma: Immobilization, Motion Management & Treatment Planning from Passive Scatter to Multifield Optimization with PBS.”
Christa Nelson, PT, DPT, PhD, Assistant Professor; Peter Bowman, PT, DPT, FAAOMPT, Assistant Professor; and Odessa Addison, DPT, PhD, Assistant Professor; all from the Department of Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Science, were co-authors on a poster presentation titled, “Multi-Modal Physical Therapy Management of an Ultra-Runner Athlete Post-Meniscectomy: A Case Report” at the American Academy of Orthopaedic Manual Physical Therapists Annual Conference which was held in Reno, Nev., November 7–11, 2018. Also at that conference, Alisa Pravdo, PT, DPT, FAAOMPT, Assistant Professor, and Roy Film, PT, DPT, OCS, FAAOMPT, Assistant Professor, both from the Department of Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Science, were co-authors on a poster presentation titled, “Lumbar Rotation-Extension Syndrome: Correction of Faulty Movement Patterns in a 24-Year-Old Patient with Low Back Pain.”
Lynn Schriml, PhD, Associate Professor of Epidemiology & Public Health, Institute for Genome Sciences, was an invited keynote speaker for the 11th Hellenic Bioinformatics Conference: Genome Informatics Precision Medicine & Clinical Omics—in a World of Data Economies, held November 15–18, 2018, in Thessaloniki, Greece. Dr. Schriml’s presentation was titled, “International Microbiome Data Coordination and Consortium Studies.”
At the American College of Radiation Oncology Proton Therapy Symposium, held December 1–2, 2018 at the Miami Cancer Institute, Miami, Fla., Charles Simone, II, MD, Associate Professor, Department of Radiation Oncology, presented “Evidence Based Proton Therapy: Current Data, Enrolling Trials, and Future Directions;” “Clinical Outcomes and Treatment Planning for Proton Reirradiation: A New Chance of Cure;” and “The Importance of Clinical Research in Proton Therapy: Update from the Proton Collaborative Group.” Mark Mishra, MD, Associate Professor, also from the Department of Radiation Oncology, presented “Patient Selection and Cost-Effective Utilization of Proton Therapy,” at the same meeting.
Ivana Vucenik, PhD, Associate Professor, Department of Medical and Research Technology, presented a keynote lecture titled, “Anticancer Action of Inositol and Inositol Hexaphosphate,”at the third International Symposium on Rice Science in Global Health, in Kyoto, Japan, from November 29–30, 2018.

Cara Felter, PT, DPT, MPH, Assistant Professor, Department of Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Science, received the Henry O. and Florence P. Kendall Award at the 2018 Annual Conference of the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) of DC and Maryland, held on November 3, 2018. The Kendall Award was established as a way for the APTA of Maryland to honor its members for outstanding contributions to the field of physical therapy. Nominees are physical therapists or physical therapist assistants who have demonstrated outstanding service to the profession of physical therapy in the area(s) of patient care, supervision, administration, education, and/or research; and physical therapists or physical therapist assistants who have participated and been a dominant force in activities that have significantly affected chapter or professional growth and development.
Shyamasundaran Kottilil, MBBS, PhD, FACP, Professor of Medicine, Director, Division of Clinical Care and Research, Institute of Human Virology, was awarded the American College of Physicians (ACP) Richard and Hinda Rosenthal Award #1 from the Rosenthal Family Foundation. The award will be presented at ACP’s Convocation Ceremony on April 11, 2019, at the Pennsylvania Convention Center in Philadelphia. The award is given to a “physician-scientist, clinician, or scientific group whose recent innovative work is making a notable contribution to improve clinical care in the field of internal medicine.”
The Department of Pediatrics, Division of General Pediatrics’ practice, Pediatrics at Midtown, has been awarded the Gold award for being Breastfeeding Friendly for the Healthcare Provider awards. This is awarded to healthcare offices that promote and support breastfeeding through the combination of an office environment and education of healthcare professionals, office staff and families.

Jennifer Albrecht, PhD, Assistant Professor, Department of Epidemiology & Public Health, received the American Academy of Sleep Medicine’s 2018 Strategic Research Award for “Impact of High PAP Adherence on Cardiovascular Outcomes Among Medicare Beneficiaries with Obstructive Sleep Apnea, 2006–2013.” This is a three-year grant in the amount of $249,721.
Uttam Bodanapally, MBBS, Assistant Professor, and Thorsten Fleiter, MD, Associate Professor, both from the Department of Diagnostic Radiology and Nuclear Medicine, were awarded a one-year $85,000 grant from Siemens Medical Solutions for “Artificial Intelligence (AI) Pipeline in Detection of Traumatic Intracranial Bleeds on Head CT.”
Poorna Dharmasri, Neuroscience PhD Student, Department of Physiology, received an Individual National Research Service Award in the amount of $125,403 for “Glutamate Receptor-Mediated Organization of Synaptic Nanostructure.”
Jay Magaziner, PhD, MSHyg, Professor and Chair, and Kathleen Tracy, PhD, Associate Professor, both from the Department of Epidemiology & Public Health, received a three-year, $410,000 research agreement from the R. Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center for “Strategic Academic Partnership Between the Department of Epidemiology & Public Health and the Center for Injury Prevention and Policy (CIPP).”
Gibran Shaikh, MD, MS, a PGY-2 Resident, Department of Dermatology, received a one-year $5000 grant from the Maryland Dermatologic Society for his project, “Skin-to-Skin.Org: An Online Community for New Mothers.” Dr. Shaikh’s goal is to create a resource for community dermatologists, pediatricians, and obstetricians to refer their patients for comprehensive, unbiased information concerning skin care and skin disorders in pregnancy and in the neonatal period. His mentors are Marcia Driscoll, MD, PharmD, Associate Professor, and Brian Green, DO, Assistant Professor, both from the Department of Dermatology.

The book was published by InTechOpen on November 5, 2018. Dr. Chapoval also was the author of an introductory chapter in this book.
Rong Chen, PhD, Assistant Professor, Department of Diagnostic Radiology and Nuclear Medicine, was among the co-authors of “Oridonin-Loaded and GPC1-Targeted Gold Nanoparticles for Multimodal Imaging and Therapy in Pancreatic Cancer,” which was published in the International Journal of Nanomedicine on October 24, 2018.
Wengen Chen, MD, PhD, Associate Professor, and Vasken Dilsizian, MD, Professor, both from the Department of Diagnostic Radiology and Nuclear Medicine, published a state-of-the-art review article in a multi-disciplinary collaboration with Mohammad Sajadi, MD, Associate Professor of Medicine, Institute of Human Virology, titled “Merits of FDG PET/CT and Functional Molecular Imaging Over Echocardiography and CT Angiography for the Diagnosis of Cardiac Device Infections,” which was published in the November 2018 issue of the Journal of the American College of Cardiology: Cardiovascular Imaging 2018.
