Welcome New Faculty
Heather Ames, MD, PhD, joined the Department of Anatomy and Neurobiology as an Assistant Professor in May 2018. Dr. Ames was previously with Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, where she completed her R25 Research Fellowship with the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke. Dr. Ames expertise is in the evaluation of glioblastoma tumor heterogeneity, particularly as it applies to white matter invasion and unique patterns of differentiation.
Meredith McHugh, PhD, MSW, joined the Department of Anatomy and Neurobiology as an Assistant Professor in May 2018. Dr. McHugh received her PhD in Psychology from Griffith University, Australia in 2010. Later that year she moved to Baltimore where she completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the National Institute on Drug Abuse, Intramural Research Program (NIDA-IRP). During her time at NIDA-IRP Dr. McHugh identified several neural circuits and large-scale brain networks involved in relapse to drug use following treatment. Dr McHugh returned to Australia in 2015 to pursue a Masters in Social Work. In her current appointment Dr. McHugh will support and develop an ongoing research program addressing the prevention and management of Opioid Use Disorders.
Fuwen Zhou, BM, MM, Dr. rer. nat., joined the Department of Anatomy and Neurobiology as an Assistant Professor in May 2018. Dr. Zhou received his Dr. rer.nat. in Cell Biology from the University of Rostock, Germany and was a postdoctoral fellow and research associate at the University of Tennessee. Dr. Zhou studies basal ganglia, cortex and olfactory bulb neural circuits mainly using patch clamp electrophysiological, optogentical, chemogenetical, immunohistological, and stereotaxic techniques to investigate the neuroelectrophysiology of different neuronal types in different brain regions, and the pathophysiology of these neurons in neurological disorders.

France Carrier, PhD, Associate Professor, Department of Radiation Oncology, has been elected as a standing member of the Drug Discovery and Molecular Pharmacology NIH R01 Study Section for a 4-year term starting July 1.
J. Isabelle Choi, MD, Assistant Professor, Department of Radiation Oncology, was appointed on May 1 to a 3-year term on the Board of Directors of the National Association for Proton Therapy.
Vasken Dilsizian, MD, Professor, Department of Diagnostic Radiology & Nuclear Medicine, has assumed office as 2018-19 President-Elect of the Society of Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging (SNMMI). SNMMI is an international scientific and medical organization with more than 17,000 members and its mission is to improve human health by advancing nuclear medicine, molecular imaging and radionuclide therapy.
Adam Puche, PhD, Professor, Department of Anatomy & Neurobiology, was appointed Chair of the Maryland State Anatomy Board, effective May 25, 2018. The State Anatomy Board is an arm of the Maryland Department of Health and serves as the governing body for the statewide anatomic donor program.
Mary Rodgers, PT, PhD, FAPTA, FASB, FISB, Professor Emeritus, has been elected to the Nominating Committee for the Research-Intensive Programs in Physical Therapy Consortium of the American Council of Academic Physical Therapy.
Giovannino Silvestri, PhD, was appointed on July 1 as Research Associate, Program in Oncology, after five years as a Postdoctoral Fellow in the lab of Professor Danilo Perrotti, MD, PhD, in the Greenebaum Cancer Center.

Members of the Department of Radiation Oncology were among the presenters and session chairs at the annual meeting of the Society for Thermal Medicine, May 7–10, in Tucson, AZ. Residents Cristina DeCesaris, MD, Stephanie Rice, MD, and Jill Remick, MD, and graduate student Sandrine Soman received New Investigator Awards of $500 each to support travel to the meeting. Zeljko Vujaskovic, MD, PhD, Professor, co-chaired a session on Clinical/Therapeutics 1: Trials, Experiences, Retrospectives, that included presentations from the following University of Maryland Medical Center residents: Jason Molitoris, MD, PhD; Emily Kowalski, MD; Cristina DeCesaris, MD; Jill Remick, MD; Stephanie Rice, MD; Sandrine Soman; and James Snider, III, MD.
Vasken Dilsizian, MD, Professor, Department of Diagnostic Radiology & Nuclear Medicine, delivered an oral presentation titled “Imaging Inflammation for Evaluation of Device and Valve Infections,” and moderated a session titled “Opportunities for Collaboration Between SNMMI and ASNC” at the Society of Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging Annual Scientific Sessions, which was held in Philadelphia, June 22–26.
Roy Film, PT, DPT, OCS, FAAOMPT, Assistant Professor, Department of Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation of Science, taught a continuing education course to the physicians of the Western Maryland Health System in Cumberland, MD on May 22, titled “Non-Pharmacological Options for Chronic Pain Management.”
Gary Fiskum, PhD, the M. Jane Matjasko Professor for Research and Vice Chair, Department of Anesthesiology, presented three lectures at the Aerospace Medical Association meeting in Dallas in May. The titles of these lectures were “Air Evacuation-Relevant Hypobaria Following Traumatic Brain Injury Plus Hemorrhagic Shock Increases Lung Injury and Mortality”, “Effect of Aeromedical Evacuation-Relevant Hypobaria and Hyperoxia During Sepsis on Survival a Systemic Inflammation in Rats”, and “MRI and Neurophysiologic Measurements During Exposure to Hypobaria after Experimental Traumatic Brain Injury.”
Robert Gallo, MD, the Homer & Martha Gudelsky Distinguished Professor in Medicine, Director, Institute of Human Virology, presented the keynote lecture, “A Career in Virology as it Relates to Lymphocytes, Cancer, and Immune Deficiency,” at the 2018 ZIBI Summer Symposium: Infection Biology for the 21st Century: Today’s Giants Meet Tomorrow’s Leaders, held at the Humboldt Graduate School in Berlin, Germany on June 27.
Gaurav Jindal, MD, Assistant Professor, Department of Diagnostic Radiology and Nuclear Medicine and Marcella Wozniak, MD, PhD, Associate Professor, Department of Neurology, were featured in an article in The Baltimore Sun on June 3 detailing “New Guidelines for Treating Stroke Victims.”
Judy LaKind, PhD, Adjunct Associate Professor, Department of Epidemiology & Public Health, was invited to present “How to Assess and Interpret Biomonitoring Data Once You Have it,” at the Workshop on the Feasibility of Addressing Environmental Exposure Questions Using Department of Defense Biorepositories, at The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine, in Washington, DC on June 15. In addition, Dr. LaKind presented “Evidence-Based Environmental Decision-Making: Problems and Progress,” at Bundesinstitut für Risikobewertung, in Berlin, Germany, on May 24.
Sina Mossahebi, PhD, Assistant Professor, Department of Radiation Oncology, presented “Testing Dose Calculations with Stopping Power Ratio Images Constructed from Dual-Energy CT in a Commercial Treatment Planning System” on May 26 at the 57th Annual Conference of the Particle Therapy Co-Operative Group in Cincinnati. Dr. Mossahebi also presented two posters at the meeting: “Importance of Secondary Particles Produced in a Clam-Shell for Proton Therapy,” and “Evaluating the Accuracy of Stopping Power Ratio Images Derived from Dual-Energy CT for Proton Dose Calculation.”
Charlene Quinn, PhD, RN, FAAN, Associate Professor, Department of Epidemiology & Public Health, was an invited presenter and a Panel Moderator for a session on “Research End Points” at the Digital Diabetes Congress, May 22–23 in San Francisco.
Horea Rus, MD, PhD, Professor and Alexandru Tatomir, MD, Postdoctoral Fellow, both from the Department of Neurology; and medical student Jonathan Ciriello, presented “Phosphorylated SIRT1 as a Biomarker of Relapse and Response to Treatment with Glatiramer Acetate in Multiple Sclerosis” at the Consortium of Multiple Sclerosis Centers Meeting in Nashville, held May 20–June 2. Mr. Ciriello was also a recipient of a Medical Student Research Scholarship Award from the Foundation of the Consortium of Multiple Sclerosis Centers.
Karen Sack, Administrator for the Department of Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Science, was a co-speaker for the Society of Research Administrators (SRA) International Spring Intensive Training Programs. The two-day workshop, titled “Change Leadership: Pathways to Collaboration” was held in New Orleans, May 7–8. The workshop was attended by national and international research and department managers and leaders.
Sharon Saunders, MD, Adjunct Assistant Professor, Department of Medicine, abstract “Analysis of the 2016 University of Maryland School of Medicine’s Mini-Med School Program” was accepted for the 2018 American Public Health Association annual meeting poster competition. The meeting will take place from November 10–14, 2018 in San Diego.
In April, Uniformed Services University and Walter Reed National Military Medical Center hosted the 2018 Trauma Symposium, “Building a Unified Civilian-Military Trauma System in the National Capital Region.” The University of Maryland School of Medicine was represented by speakers on two panels. Thomas Scalea, MD, the Honorable Francis X. Kelly Distinguished Professor of Trauma Surgery, Director, Program in Trauma; and R. Sean Benoit, MD, MBA, Assistant Professor, Department of Surgery, presented “Perspectives from NCR Trauma Center Leadership.” Roger Stone, MD, MS, Clinical Assistant Professor, Department of Emergency Medicine, and Andrew Pollak, MD, the James Lawrence Kernan Professor, Chair, Department of Orthopaedics, presented “Perspectives from NCR Trauma System Leadership.”
Charles Simone II, MD, Associate Professor, Department of Radiation Oncology, presented “Radical/Salvage Approaches” on May 4 at the International Conference of the International Mesothelioma Interest Group in Ottawa, Canada. On May 5, Dr. Simone presented a talk at the 100th Annual Meeting of the American Radium Society in Orlando. In addition, Dr. Simone presented “Early Evidence for Improving Outcomes with SBRT in Lung Cancer Using IMPT” and “Reirradiation” at the 57th Annual Conference of the Particle Therapy Co-Operative Group on May 23 in Cincinnati. On May 30, Dr. Simone presented Grand Rounds in Radiation Oncology at the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York, on “Evidence-Based Proton Therapy for Thoracic Malignancies.”
Roger Stone, MD, MS, FACEP, FAAEM, FAEMS, Clinical Assistant Professor, and Jennifer Guyther, MD, Assistant Professor, both from the Department of Emergency Medicine, presented lectures at Maryland EMS Care 2018 in Ocean City, MD, in April. This annual event is designed as a continuing education opportunity for emergency medical services providers, nurses, and firerescue personnel. Dr. Stone presented “Attitudes and Culture in Our Fire-Based EMS Systems” and co-led a course on management of the difficult airway; and Dr. Guyther presented “Pediatric Seizures: Subtle versus Status.” Separately, Dr. Stone was a speaker at the 23rd Annual Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Medical Directors’ Symposium, hosted by the Maryland Institute for Emergency Medical Services Systems in Sykesville, MD, on April 11. Dr. Stone spoke during the session on EMS board certification updates for physicians. The title of his presentation was “Your EMS Grandfather Status and the Fountain of Youth: ABEM Made it Easier to Sit for the Exam!”
On June 3, Kelly Westlake, PhD, MSc, PT, Assistant Professor and Brian Johnson, OTR/L, PhD Candidate and Graduate Research Assistant, both from the Department of Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Science, presented a poster they co-authored titled “The Effects of Targeted Memory Reactivation During a Daytime Nap on Sensorimotor Skill Performance in Healthy Young Adults” at SLEEP—the annual meeting of the Associated Professional Sleep Societies which was held in Baltimore. The Associated Professional Sleep Societies, LLC, is a joint partnership of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine and the Sleep Research Society. The SLEEP meeting is an annual meeting of the leading researchers and clinicians in the field of sleep medicine.
Mingyao Zhu, PhD, Assistant Professor, and Peng Wang, PhD, Assistant Professor, both from Department of Radiation Oncology, presented posters at the 57th Annual Conference of the Particle Therapy Co-Operative Group in Cincinnati, titled “Can Robust Optimization Reduce Adaptive Planning Requirements Due to Anatomical Changes for Head and Neck IMPT Treatments?” and “Feedback Based Voluntary Moderate Breath Hold Proton Pencil Beam Scanning Treatment” respectively.
The Department of Diagnostic Radiology and Nuclear Medicine held its annual Research Day featuring the Sixth Annual John M. Dennis, MD Lecture on June 6. The featured speaker was Martin Pomper, MD, PhD from Johns Hopkins University who spoke on “Precision Medicine.” The 2018 Bruce Roberts Line Prize Awardee was Charles White, MD, Professor and Vice Chairman for Clinical Affairs, Department of Diagnostic Radiology and Nuclear Medicine. The 2018 RSNA Resident Research Awardee was Vikash Gupta, MD, Department of Diagnostic Radiology and Nuclear Medicine.
Albulkalam Shamsuddin, MBBS, PhD, Professor, Department of Pathology, organized an international symposium “Health Benefits and Other Applications of IP6 & Inositol” in Xi’an, China in October 2017, in which he was also the keynote speaker.

Sally Cheston, MD, Assistant Professor, Department of Radiation Oncology, received a special Governor’s Citation from Maryland Governor Larry Hogan on May 10. The award was presented to Dr. Cheston at Central Maryland Radiation Oncology (CMRO) by Robert R. Neall, Secretary of the Maryland Department of Health, in recognition of her long-term and outstanding work in creating and sustaining a joint UM SOM/Johns Hopkins program in radiation oncology at Howard County General Hospital.
Adam Puche, PhD, Professor, Department of Anatomy & Neurobiology, received the Student Council Award for Best Pre-Clinical Faculty from the University of Maryland School of Medicine Class of 2018, presented at the University of Maryland School of Medicine graduation ceremony at the Hippodrome Theatre on May 17. Dr. Puche also received the 2018 Pass and Susel Medical Education Tool Chest Award from the Pass and Susel Academy of Educational Excellence, presented at the twelfth annual Student Awards Ceremony and Dinner on May 16.
Shabnam Salimi, MD, MSc, Research Associate, Department of Epidemiology & Public Health, was awarded Best Poster at the national Claude D. Pepper Older Americans Independence Center for his poster: “Soluble Tumor Necrosis Factor Alpha Receptor 1, Bone Resorption and Bone Mineral Density in the Year Following Hip Fractures: The Baltimore Hip Studies.” The meeting was held in Arlington, VA in May 2018.

Eugene Albrecht, PhD, Professor, Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Sciences, received a five-year $3,152,686 grant from the National Institute of Health for “Regulation of Uterine Spiral Artery Remodeling during Primate Pregnancy.”
Muthukumar Gunasekaran, PhD, Postdoctoral Fellow, Center for Vascular and Inflammatory Diseases, received a two-year, $130,000 Postdoctoral Fellowship Grant from Maryland Stem Cell Research Fund. Dr. Gunasekaran’s study, “Donor Derived Exosomes as Non-Invasive Serum Biomarker for Immune Rejection Following Human Neonatal Cardiac Progenitor Cell Transplantation” focuses on donor derived exosomes as non-invasive serum biomarkers for immune rejection following human neonatal cardiac progenitor cell transplantation.
Gary Fiskum, PhD, the M. Jane Matjasko Professor for Research and Vice Chair, Department of Anesthesiology, Adam Puche, PhD, Professor, Department of Anatomy and Neurobiology, and Rao Gullapalli, PhD, MBA, Professor, Department of Diagnostic Radiology and Nuclear Medicine, were awarded a two-year, $755,283 grant from the US Air Force for “MRI and Neurophysiologic Measurements during Exposure to Hypobaria after Experimental TBI.”
Tami Kingsbury, PhD, Assistant Professor of Physiology, Center for Stem Cell Biology & Regenerative Medicine, received an 18-month Momentum Fellowship in the amount of $75,000 from The Mark Foundation for Cancer Research for “Molecular Interactions of PSEDN Members in Cancer.”
Lauren Jackson, PhD, Associate Professor, Department of Radiation Oncology, was awarded a one-year subcontract for $1,300,590 with Humanetics Corporation under National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases for “An NHP Efficacy Study of BIO 300 for the Mitigation of DEARE-induced Pneumonitis and Pulmonary Fibrosis.”
Min Jung Kim, PhD, Research Associate of Pediatrics, Center for Stem Cell Biology & Regenerative Medicine, received a two-year $300,000 Discovery Grant from the Maryland Stem Cell Research Fund, TEDCO for “Reducing RAB GTPase14 to Drive In vitro Human Erythropoiesis.”
Thomas MacVittie, PhD, Professor, Department of Radiation Oncology, through a seven-month subcontract with SRI on the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases Medical Countermeasures Against Radiological Threats contract, was awarded $3,771,098 to “Assess the Efficacy of Filgrastim (Neupogen®) or Peg-Filgrastim (Neulasta®) on Mitigating Co-Morbidities and Mortality of Multi-Organ Injury (MOI) Associated with Concurrent GI-ARS, Prolonged GI Injury and Delayed Effects to Lung and Kidney Characteristic of the DEARE in NHP Exposed to 10 Gy Using the PBI/BM 2.5 Protocol.”
Rachana Mishra, PhD, Research Associate, Department of Surgery, Center for Vascular and Inflammatory Diseases, received a two-year, $345,000 grant from Maryland Stem Cell Research Fund 2018 Discovery Program. Dr. Mishra’s study, “Mesenchymal Stem Cells Preserve Right Ventricular Myocardium” is to interrogate molecular mechanism triggered by mesenchymal stem cells transplantation to promote reverse remodeling of the dysfunctional RV myocardium.
Matthew Trudeau, PhD, Associate Professor and Andrea Meredith, PhD, Associate Professor, both from the Department of Physiology, received a five-year, $1,044,840 competing renewal T32 training grant from the National Institute of General Medical Sciences. This inter-departmental training grant will continue support for the Training Program in Integrative Membrane Biology, incepted in 1987 and now in its 31st year of continuous funding. The grant provides support for pre-doctoral training in the biophysics, biochemistry, structure, cell and molecular biology, and physiology of biological membranes, through the Graduate Program in Life Sciences.
